It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander (Sandy) William Argue, born on October 16, 1942, in Vancouver, BC, who, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 5, 2023, in Victoria, BC.
Sandy was a beloved husband to Margaret, devoted father to Jonathan, Briony, and David, and loving grandfather to Rosalind, Conall, Violet, and Zoë.
He was a passionate fisheries marine biologist, who was well respected by his colleagues and friends.
“The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”
Jacques Cousteau
From a tender age, Sandy loved everything to do with fish, fishing, and the ocean. As a young man, he briefly considered a career in accounting, however his uncle Bill Argue, head of the UNB Biology Department, quickly convinced him otherwise and he went on to pursue a Master of Science from UBC. His long and exciting career, beginning with DFO in Vancouver, lead him to the SPC in New Caledonia, the negotiating tables of the Canada/USA Salmon Wars, and the tuna fishery of BC.
Sandy was a kind, loyal, entertaining, and broadminded soul who was always willing to lend his expertise, engage in a good debate, and listen with an open heart. He loved attending grandchildren's sports events, fishing in the waters off of Telegraph Bay, and tending to his fishpond and raspberry patch. He cherished his time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. The family would like to thank all those who were part of his life. We know how important everybody was to him. Sandy will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held in his honour at the University Club of Victoria on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 2:30 PM. Please RSVP at https://www.argue.ca/
