Amos A Stagg 111

October 31, 1927 — October 19, 2023

Amos Alonzo Stagg III passed away Oct. 19 on Vancouver Island where he had lived for 22 years. He was 12 days shy of his 96th birthday. He was predeceased by his parents, Amos A. Jr. and Arvilla, his son Lonnie (Amos A IV) and Brenda’s son, Kevin. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan Konynenbelt Stagg, his children, and their families: Lonnie’s daughter, Regina (Frank Bednarsky), Brody, Jersey; his daughter Brenda, her daughters Niki (Nick Herrema) Brayden, Lucas and Jaime (Leigh Johnson) Sophie, Nora; his son Robert (T’Onna) Stagg, their son Ryder (Ashleigh) Cee Cee, Payton; his sister, Barbara Eccker.

Amos was born in Chicago; the grandson of Amos A. Stagg who is remembered as the “Grand Old Man” of American College Football. When Amos was 7 they left Chicago for Selingsgrove PA. When Amos finished high school he went to CIC school, then became a Communication officer on the Sea Cloud, Marjorie Merriweather Post’s yacht. Amos said his job was in part inviting rich people (the Astors, etc.) to parties. He then was in the US Navy. His family spent their summers at their cottage on Lake Michigan in Holland and Amos decided to attend Michigan State University. He then lived and worked and raised his family in Grand Rapids.

Amos and Joan were married in 1971. They moved to Vancouver Island in 2001, a wonderful and beautiful place to live.

Amos loved his family and was dearly loved by them. Great times were the norm, snowmobiling ‘up north’, skiing, going to the beach, visits at the family cottages (Lake Michigan and Baldwin), hiking especially in Northern Michigan. Machkinac Island was Amos and Joan’s favorite.

Amos was a happy, positive, fun-loving person. He had many friends and created much joy. He loved all sports, but Michigan State football and basketball were his favorites. GO GREEN!!

A special mention to my sister and brother-in-law Karen and Andy Vos. Amos and Andy watched a gazillion games together. Karen has been a tremendous, loving support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
