We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Basil Francis Wells at Victoria Hospice on November 19, 2022. Basil leaves behind from his first marriage his sons Blair(Terry) and Roy. His wife of 36 years Carole, stepsons Dan(Em), Dave(Sherri), grandson Colton(Sophia) and many dearly loved nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one great, great niece.
Basil was born on February 23, 1939 in Nelson, B.C. He relocated to Vancouver Island at an early age where he grew up in Happy Valley, attending Happy Valley Elementary and Belmont High Schools. He completed his carpentry apprenticeship in 1961 and eventually joined the team at Campbell Construction, becoming partner and Senior Estimator until his retirement in 2000. He was a great asset to the company and highly respected by all.
Basil spent 22 years involved in auto racing at Western Speedway, the last 12 years as a member of the Old Time Racers Association. In retirement, Basil fulfilled his lifelong dream of rebuilding and restoring a 1948 Ford business coupe.
Basil was a gentle, compassionate soul, always putting others before himself – a perfectionist in every project he undertook. He was the love of my life, my forever soulmate – we shared a very special love. He will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him.
God looked around his garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.
He knew you were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
He also knew in Heaven, you would never hurt again.
He saw the road was getting rough and the hills harder to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered, “peace be thine”.
It broke my heart to lose you but you didn’t go alone.
For part of me went with you, the day God called you home.
If tears could build a staircase and memories a lane.
I would walk all the way to Heaven and bring you home again.
