Belinda Geraghty (Inness) was born in Hull, England, on December 29, 1947, to George William Inness and Grace Inness (Frost). Belinda's home life was difficult, but she was bright and independent, leaving home in 1966 to emigrate to Canada. She arrived in Vancouver not knowing a soul and worked various jobs, saving her money to attend Simon Fraser University where she graduated with a B.A. degree in Arts. After university, she secured a job in probation that eventually led to jobs in bail supervision, supervising intellectually disabled offenders, working as a Family Court Counsellor in the Supreme Court of B.C., and later in helping set up the first drug treatment court in Vancouver. In 1981 she married George Geraghty, two years her senior, who practised law in Vancouver. They were married for thirty-six years, most of that time in West Vancouver, before retiring to Cordova Bay on Vancouver Island. Belinda passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017, after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, George (71), and son, Patrick (33). Always a dedicated helper to those in need, Belinda continued to be involved with volunteer work in the community right up until her diagnosis. The family wishes to thank all the people who were instrumental in Belinda's care, particularly the Victoria palliative home care nurses and the Victoria Hospice staff.
