It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Betye Boyd Carey on the 14th of June 2016. Born in 1934 in Oakland, California, Betye is survived by her beloved partner of 32 years, Grant Halischuk, her children, Kristina (Frank) and Anthony (Laura) and her brothers Chet (Anne) and Stan (Elizabeth), as well as grandchildren Andrew, Laurel and James. Betye's life was a grand adventure that took her through California, Oregon, New York, Washington DC, North Carolina and, finally, to her dear Victoria, B.C. Betye enjoyed two vibrant careers during her life--early childhood education and psychiatric social work in the Veterans Administration. A longtime member of the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting (North Carolina), Betye maintained a lifetime commitment to peace and social justice. Throughout her life she was passionate about the arts. She was an accomplished amateur sculptor, painter and metalsmith, as well as an avid art collector. Betye had a particular affection for baroque music. She loved the ballet and studied ballet and modern dance and was for many years a member of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society in Chapel Hill. Betye was a warm and wonderful human being. Her generosity of spirit, intellectual curiosity and zest for life will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Those who wish to make a donation in Betye's memory are invited to do so to either Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org )or the Southern Poverty Law Center (www.splcenter.org).
