Carmen Sylvia Edith (Warkentin) Chick (September 6, 1931 - November 4, 2016) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Sylvia Chick. Born to Agnes and Bernhard Warkentin, Sylvia was predeceased by her husband Courtney Babcock Chick Jr., her sisters Elvira Warkentin, Silva Warkentin, Charlotte Plenert, Irma Jupp and Brunhild Ludwig. She is survived by her three children, Brita (Greg), Courtney (Sylvie) and Martha (David). When planning her family, Sylvia decided that three children would be best so that she would have the necessary number for playing Bridge. We felt obliged to comply; resistance was futile. Additionally survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, all of whom she adored.
From rural Manitoba to Kitchener, Windsor, Montreal, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Seattle, Ottawa (again) and finally Victoria - she gathered many friends along the way.
Sylvia can be described in one word⦠(yeah, right!) Perfectionist, organized, political, bibliophile, logophile (go Google that), creative, baker, hostess, teacher, manager, gardener, volunteer, Internet researcher, editor, humorous, sharp witted, multi-lingual, Virgo, fashionable, debater, animal lover, loyal, rational, analytical, kind, hard worker, practical, problem solver, activist, âScrabbler', knitter and seamstress. In her twenties, Sylvia worked as a teacher and then (once her Bridge partners had grown up and left home) she switched careers and found herself working in the Prime Minister's Office as head of the correspondence unit and then later in the scheduling department. Sylvia enjoyed being a part of the political environment where she was truly in her element, able to utilize many of her talents. Once retired she moved to Victoria and found an outlet for her love of gardening by volunteering at Government House Gardens.
Sylvia's family would like to extend their gratitude to the Inner Quest healing team for their service, and to the wonderful staff at both Hart House and Douglas House for showing their mother friendship, compassion and support in her final years.
A late February memorial service is planned and will be held in Victoria. Details will be made available at the Earth's Option website where condolences may also be left: http://www.earthsoption.com/obituaries/Carmen-Sylvia-Edith-CHICK?obId=1201244#/celebrationWall In lieu of flowers, donations will be graciously accepted by any of the following: Victoria Hospice http://www.victoriahospice.org, Inner Quest Foundation http://www.innerquestfoundation.com/contact-us/ Victoria SPCA http://www.spca.bc.ca/branches/victoria/ "Mom, we will always love you always and miss you always, until we meet again!
