It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Cosby Phillis Letitia Combe (Pottage) on July 1 at the age of 98 years. Cosby grew up in High Prairie, Alberta where she was the eldest of four siblings. Her first job was as a secretary in her fathers law office, which eventually led her to graduate from a commercial course at Alberta College. In 1943, Cosby enlisted into the Canadian Navy in Edmonton as a Wren, but waited a year to complete basic training in order to help her family move to Victoria. She was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1944 as a writer and then as general service. She kept signals from the ships and handed out ration books to sailors on leave until she was discharged in Esquimalt in 1946. Cosby took a handicraft course at Ste.Anne de Bellville, Quebec in 1947 and moved to Vancouver where she worked secretarial jobs. On June 30, 1951 Cosby married Christopher John Combe, the love of her life, at St. Davids by the Sea in Cordova Bay. They adopted their baby girl, Janet, in 1961. Cosby and Chris belonged to the Eastern Star and the Dogwood Trailer Club. Cosby was a devout Christian and attended church every Sunday, even after Chris sudden death in 1971. She enjoyed walking to town almost every day and had a passion for photography. She was a genuine, kind woman and had a smile for everyone she happened to meet. She is survived by her daughter Janet and granddaughter Brandi. A most heartfelt thanks to the staff on 4A South at Victoria General Hospital for their compassion and respect during Cosbys last days. A memorial service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Home on Falaise Dr on July 19th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Victoria Hospice.
