Diane Elizabeth Carr

d. September 1, 2016

Diane Carr succumbed quickly to pancreatic cancer and passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 1st.
Diane was born in Aldershot, UK and lived in Port Alberni from the age of three. Her adult years were spent between Victoria, Vancouver, University of Calgary, the Baca Grande in Colorado and traveling the world on a sailboat. Diane was fiercely intelligent, articulate and knowledgeable. She had a strong voice for beauty, truth and justice and made a huge and enduring contribution to the furtherance of Canadian craft, particularly ceramic art. She was a spokeswoman for breast cancer, an advocate for the homeless and a fighter for her beliefs regarding successful land use and the process of city making. Diane founded the Potter's Wheel Ceramic Gallery in Victoria in the 70's, then The Cartwright Gallery on Granville Island in the 80's. Diane was a visionary for Canadian Craft at the time as the Cartwright transformed into the Canadian Craft Museum. Diane Carr was an exemplary curator and writer, an able administrator and manager of numerous cultural organizations and projects. She was spokeswoman for the Canadian Breast Cancer Network and traveled extensively speaking and developing better methods for dealing with breast cancer. She was a transformative voice in Victoria and Vic West; for Vic West Waterfront development, helping the homeless with the founding of Woodwyn Farms, finding a regional water waste treatment solution and she was an active supporter in politics for BC, Victoria and particularly Vic West. Diane was irreplaceable and singular. She will be greatly missed by those close to her, those who worked with her and all who knew her.
