Dirk Maasland 81, passed on October 7th following an exceedingly full life. Loving husband of Paula for 58 years and father of Francine (Gary) Canberra Australia children Kyaa and Logan, Albert (Sian) London UK children Sophie, Laura and Robert and their mother Suzanne, Steven (Mara) Moorestown NJ, children Céline and Anaïs, and Anita (Mike) Ottawa children Mackenzie, Matthew, Jacob and Zoë. Born in the Netherlands, Dirk finished his PhD in Hydrology at Colorado State University before coming to Canada. He taught at the University of Windsor before moving to the Science Council of Canada. He served at the OECD in Paris and then in various government departments. He retired as Assistant Deputy Minister in charge of the Income Security Branch of the Department of Health and Welfare administering the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security. An accomplished pianist, Dirk was a jazz aficionado who kept up with this passion as a member of a variety of jazz bands, including his own Phoenix Jazz Band. He appeared on a weekly live jazz radio show with the Phoenix for a number of years. He was a long time Rotary club member, avid globetrotting walker and voracious reader. He was humming and tapping his hand to the music till the very end.
