Don Falder passed away peacefully July 27, 2016 with his beloved wife Judy at his side. He leaves behind two daughters, Karen and Catharine, sons-in-law Les Garrioch and Allan Wade, grandchildren Nathan, Trevor (Tanya), Andrew, Darcy, Olivia, Nicholas, Hannah and 7 great grandchildren.
Don was born in Cwmaman, Wales, the youngest of 10 and the lucky seventh son. Determined that he not go down the coal mines, his family encouraged his studies and after serving with the British Army in India, he returned to a teaching career in England. He and Judy Ducat were married in 1948. In 1957, Don brought his young family to Canada, to Lloydminster then Bagotville, Quebec. In 1966 the family moved to Victoria, where Don taught at George Jay and Frank Hobbs before becoming principal at Bank Street, Torquay, and Willows Elementary schools. After retiring in 1986 Don and Judy moved to Piers Island and then Duncan. They travelled extensively, returning annually to the UK to spend time with old friends and family. Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather who lavished hugs, little songs, and abundant hospitality on all who visited - a proverbial âJack of all Trades', who embarked with great optimism on many and varied projects, a surprising number of which actually reached fruition!
Don was an avid photographer, a capable gardener, a reliable bridge partner and an adventurous chef. He was generous with his delicious chutneys and marmalades and his creative, personalized birthday cards are treasured family mementos. Above all else, Don's life work was education. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his students and colleagues: whenever you support a teacher or encourage a child, you will be contributing to Don's legacy. Although Don struggled with dementia in the last few years of his life, he never lost his playful spirit or the warm twinkle in his eye. Many thanks to the kind and caring staff at Luther Court for their support in his final few months.
