Doug died peacefully in the early hours of August 9 at Kiwanis Pavilion, Victoria. Born in Schreiber, ON, he is predeceased by his parents Percy and Nellie Sly (Priske), sisters Dorothy and Marjorie, and brother Gordon, and is survived by his sister Sherrill Sly (Cary Salmi) of Sidney. Doug leaves behind his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorothy, sons Gordon (Sheri), Greg (Carolyn), Monty, Ken (Agnes), and daughter Marnie, as well as six grandchildren: Sophia, Valerie, Julien, Chantal, Jasmine and Linnea. Doug graduated in Arts and Theology from United College, Winnipeg, and was ordained into the ministry of the United Church of Canada in 1960. He served in Manitoba and Ontario. He and Dorothy retired to Vancouver Island in 1998. Doug's avocation was music. He sang baritone in barbershop quartets and directed barbershop choruses for over forty years, most recently in Comox, BC. In retirement he also sang in the choir of Knox Church, Parksville. Until his move to Victoria five years ago, Doug was an active member of Qualicum Beach Sunrise Rotary Club. A celebration of Doug's life will be held in Brentwood Bay United Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, with reception to follow. Doug's life was guided by the text from Micah: do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. No flowers please. Instead, you may donate to Doug's favourite charity, Children of Bukati. See www.childrenofbukati.com - How to Donate. The family thanks the compassionate staff of Kiwanis Pavilion, Doug's home for the past two years.
