Edna Eileen Wright

April 22, 1928 — December 25, 2022

It is with great sadness, we announce, Edna Eileen Wright died peacefully on Sunday, December 25, 2022 at the age of 94 at Hospice in Victoria, BC.

Edna is survived by her son, Ce Cayne of Victoria, BC and by her niece Stephanie McCoy, her granddaughter Alycia Hulce, her grandson Jason Will, and her great grandchildren Kayla, Brody, Emma, and Ryan who all live in the United States. Edna is predeceased by her husband of 47 years, John Wright, her daughter Kathleen Harris, and her grandson Roman Sweat.

Edna was born on April 22, 1928 in Fresno, California. She married her childhood sweetheart, John and together they had two children. They immigrated from California to Canada and became Canadian Citizens. Much of their working lives were at William’s Lake and Cranbrook, BC.

After 35 years in the communications industry, Edna retired to continue her spiritual pursuits. She became the first recipient invited to the Order of the West, as an Associate with the Congregation de Notre Dame St. Marguerite Bourgeoys of Montreal. She also was on staff at Marywood House of Prayer in Cranbrook, BC for seven years.

Edna moved to Victoria, BC after the sudden death of her beloved John. She continued with her life of service by volunteering with the Victoria Hospice Society. For thirty-four years, Edna companioned the terminally ill and their families, as a hospice volunteer and companioned individuals through their daily prayer life, as a spiritual mentor.

Edna held a strong belief in spirituality. Mentoring people from all walks of life, always respecting everyone’s way of life and spiritual beliefs. She brought with her a gentle kindness with every encounter. She believed life should be lived with a childish wonder, and she had a wonderful sense of humour and a beautiful giggle. “A quirky family tradition was to put an error in any “first” project that was handmade. This eased the tension of having achieved perfection and supported trying our best…Some traditions should not be abandoned.”

This tradition held true even in her published book. In 2002, Edna wrote “Fruit of the Harvest: A Spiritual Journey in a Personal Experience of Greiving”. Within the final pages, Edna’s poem titled “The Frost” can be found, and whose final verse reads:

I pray that on the day to come,

When I am touched, harvested, taken,

I pray I feel those same gentle senses of movement inside,

Then, trustfully close my eyes and waken

Edna was so loved by family, friends, and her companioning clients. She will be dearly missed. Edna has requested no service. If you wish, donations can be made to Victoria Hospice.
