Born in Aransas Pass, Texas, USA, Allene "Al" Kelly passed away May 14, 2018 in Victoria, BC, Canada, at the age of 90 after a brief illness. Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Allene Kelly will be remembered as a spitfire in a small package, an artist, a world traveler, a bridge player, and so much more. She was a woman of faith who loved deeply and loved to laugh, a wonderful mother, a good friend to many, an encourager, a curious mind, one who genuinely took interest in the lives of others near and far, and a truly kind, sweet, and generous soul.
Allene, or Al, grew up in Galveston, TX, USA, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. When she married Ralph Curtis at the end of World War II, they moved to his home town of Centralia, Washington, where they lived and raised their children-Jim and Gayle-until Ralph's death in 1971. In 1974, Allene married Eber Kelly and moved to North Vancouver, BC, close to step-daughters-Maureen Kelly Hayes and Deirdre Kelly. Upon Eber's retirement from KPMG in the early 1980s, Allene and Eber lived in Malawi, Africa, working with the Presbyterian Church to train Malawian accountants in the church finance. In the early 1990s they moved to Victoria, BC, where Al continued to reside after Eber's death in 1996.
With her family in Texas, Allene and her family traveled cross-country every other summer. Although she never forgot her Texas roots, Al called Canada her home for many years, made special by family and the many friendships she formed. Stirred by her interest in learning about others and their culture, Al's travel bug took her to all the world's continents except Antarctica. From Texas to Washington, and from Vancouver to Victoria and round the world, many family and friends were blessed by Al's joy and positivity.
Allene "Al" Kelly is preceded in death by her two loving husbands, Ralph R. Curtis (Centralia, WA, USA) and H. Eber C. Kelly (Victoria, BC, Canada), parents Thomas Allen Meadows and Addie Nell Meadows Meadows (unrelated before marriage), brother Marcus Meadows and sister Jimmie Merle Meadows Kirschner, grandsons Joel Alan Curtis and Jordan Marshall Curtis, and step-daughter Deirdre Kelly (Victoria, BC). She leaves behind her American family-children Jim Curtis (Florida) and Gayle Curtis (Texas), daughter-in-law Debbie Curtis, grandchildren Ryan Curtis, Justin and Amanda Curtis, Joshua Curtis and Kelly Price, great-grandchildren Kody, Ireland, and Addy-and her Canadian family-Maureen and Stephen Hayes, John Hillian, grandchildren Matthew Hillian, and Emma Hillian and Mark Sheeler, and great-granddaughter Frances. To her many friends around the world, thank you for your longtime friendship and love. We have all been blessed to have this wonderful woman in our lives for so many years.
At her request, the family will have a small private gathering in Victoria, after which her remains will be carried back to Texas and ashes scattered in the Gulf of Mexico close to her childhood home.
If desired, donations in her honour may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of British Columbia (click donations on the left menu).
