Elva E. Fizzard (1933-2025). Elva Edna Fizzard (née Blake) passed away peacefully on March 15th, 2025, at Victoria, British Columbia. Born February 6, 1933, at Barr’d Islands on Fogo Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, she was the youngest child of loving parents Flora and Levi Blake. She trained as a teacher and taught at Seldom on Fogo Island, Kettle Cove, St. Anthony, Bishop’s Falls, and at Holloway School in St. John’s. She studied for her B.A. in Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland in the 1950s. In 1961 she married Garfield Fizzard of Grand Bank, a new professor in the Faculty of Education at Memorial University. After they started their family, Elva became a full-time homemaker, concentrating on creating a happy home life for her children when they were young. Elva also supported Gar in his work and cared for her mother, Flora, who lived with the family. She eventually returned to the workforce, ultimately obtaining a position at the Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University. As well, she and Gar bought and restored The Thorndyke, a historic residence in Grand Bank, running it as a B&B for several summers. Elva was also a dedicated volunteer at Gower Street United Church, being especially involved with the United Church Women.
Elva is survived and missed by her three children, Anne, Blake (Cindy née Hartery), and Allison (Brian Herman); her three beloved grandchildren, Molly, John, and Max; as well as by extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Flora and Levi Blake and by her siblings Sarah, Molly, and John Blake.
Cremation will take place in Victoria. A memorial service will be held in St. John’s at Gower Street United Church at a future date.
