Emily Rothwell

Born and raised in New York, Sue was the first born of Tom and Marie Rothwell. Sue was born while Tom was at war in Italy, and first met her father when she was one year old. While overseas, he sent her postcards, drawings and letters, which her family still cherish. Sue was a feisty little kid; when the neighbourhood bully, Crawford, knocked her off her new tricycle, she quickly knocked him off and rode away. Some trouble ensued, but her parents stood by her as they always had and always would. Sue loved a challenge. She earned her Bachelors degree in Nursing at Cornell; her Masters degree at the University of California (San Francisco), and at the height of the war in Vietnam, was enrolled at Berkeley in the Physiology doctoral program. Sue was offered a position at UBC in Vancouver; she spent a year travelling throughout BC, teaching cardiac and critical care to medical professionals. Then followed a thirty year career in health administration and as a consultant in health policy and planning. When she turned 50, Sue earned her private pilots license and enjoyed many years flying her planes around the province. She was a pilot, a sailor, a hiker, a traveller, and she loved to prepare wonderful dinners for her network of friends and family. Sue is greatly missed by Jan West, her partner of 35 years, her network of friends and family, and her two elderly Shelties. She will be remembered for her intelligence, principles, stubbornness, and most of all, for her wicked sense of humour.
