Ernest Wesley 'Ernie' Stigant

Ernest Wesley Stigant passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 7, 2016. Born in Winnipeg, MB to Hilda and Ernie Stigant, he worked passionately as the Executive Director of the Winnipeg Arts Council before moving to Victoria, BC in 1989. In Victoria, with his wife Cathy of 30 years and their daughters Gabrielle and Jessica, he enjoyed owning a small framing/art gallery. Despite physical restrictions caused by MS, Ernie was an active volunteer through the MS Society, Harbourside Rotary Club, Fringe Festival and the Intrepid Theatre. He was also a patient volunteer for many medical students, in which he took great pride. Ernie, was a top fundraiser for the MS Society and advocated on behalf of people living with MS through his time on the Board. Ernie was often seen scootering around downtown Victoria wearing his dapper hats - a different one for each season, and popping into patisseries and charcuteries on his Saturday rounds. Ernie took great pride in being a father and a grandfather to his grandchildren Marley, Tabitha and Desmond who gave him great joy. He was incredibly sad to leave them so soon. He is survived by his loving sister and brother-in-law Bev and Ray Conley; daughters Gabrielle Stigant (Norman Petkau), Jessica Stigant (Scott Towne); and adoring grandchildren. During his final months, Dad reminisced about his bohemian days at Chelsea Court in Winnipeg, family vacations to Victoria Beach and the enjoyable one year adventure living in London, England. Ernie leaves behind very special family and friends to name a few: Jack, John, Cathy, Felix, Debbie, Joel, Fran, Leslie, Pieta, Harvey, Lee, Pat, Trisha and the Millennium Stars…and of course all the Winnipeg, NDP, West coasters. As an avid fundraiser, Ernie would encourage donations to either the MS Society of Victoria or Harbourside Rotary. A celebration of life is being planned for the near future.
