LAYTON, Frances (Fran) It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr Fran Layton on March 21, 2015. Fran was at home in Saanich, B.C. with her sister, Judith, who was visiting from Australia. Fran, daughter of the late Jack and Lillias Layton, and sister to her brother the late John Layton is survived by her sister Judith, her nieces Jennifer, Dianne, Catherine and Ruth, her nephews Peter and Gregory, their partners and children and her dear friends. Fran grew up in the Lake Macquarie area of New South Wales, Australia and attended school nearby in Newcastle. Fran had undertaken teacher training in the Sydney Teachers College within the University of Sydney, had taught in public schools within New South Wales and was a professional golfer before leaving Australia with her good friend Margaret Moody. She taught in England and eventually moved to and made Canada her home. Fran undertook further study at the University of Oregon: a Bachelor of Education, a Master of Science (Honors), and with a Dissertation examining the importance of the personal qualities of the teacher as equal to teaching methodology and classroom settings, a Doctor of Philosophy. Throughout her life, Fran maintained the skills of a woodworker, learned from her father Jack, and made by hand many items of furniture used about her home. Fran held an appointment as a Lecturer at the University of British Columbia and had a long and respected career as a teacher and administrator in the Canadian public school system; she retired as Superintendent of Schools for Hope School District # 32. Fran had taken an active interest in Strata Council management and following her retirement from the public school system was known within Greater Victoria for her skills in Strata building construction management. Fran will be sadly missed. - See more at: file:///Users/chrisbenesch/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/Outlook%20Temp/Frances%20Layton%20Obituary%20-%20Victoria,%20BC%20%7C%20The%20Times%20Colonist.html#sthash.H7KqSjBU.dpuf
