Fran was born in 1931 in Fairfield, in her family home, a proud third-generation Victorian whose life was deeply rooted in the history and heart of Victoria. She was predeceased by her brother, George; her sister-in-law, Virginia; and nephew, David and niece Nicki. They were among her nearest and dearest family members, and she loved her parents dearly.
Fran was a mother to three children: Bruce (Nancy), Tami (Kenny), and Diane (Russ). She was a grandmother to Meghan, Bobbi, Tanya, Will, and Allan, and a Great-grandmother to Mackenzie, Presley, and Brantley.
Victoria was more than just home to Fran — it was part of her identity. Her Grandfather opened the first coach service for the Lieutenant Governor’s House, and Fran carried a deep appreciation for the city’s rich history throughout her life. She loved the outdoors, enjoyed fishing and bowling, and found great joy in the simple rhythms of everyday life.
Fran worked as a telephone and switchboard operator, a role she truly loved. Her career included service with the RCMP, BC Tel, and Eaton’s, where her calm presence, sharp memory, and warm voice connected countless people long before the age of digital communication.
A lover of birds, Fran delighted in watching them from her window and sharing stories with her treasured coffee group. Gardening was one of her greatest passions and a source of peace and joy throughout her life. As a child, she worked alongside her father as a groundskeeper at Ross Bay Cemetery — an early experience that further tied her to Victoria’s landscape and history.
Fran was able to live in her home with the support of her daughter, Diane; these were her wishes. Fran treasured her home and her window view. She often said, “If I didn’t have my walker, I would be out gardening.”
The family would like to express their gratitude for the exceptional care Fran received at Victoria General Hospital. The staff of the 5 South Wing supported her with compassion, kindness, and unwavering attention to her physical and emotional needs during her final days.
The family is extremely grateful for the kindness and support of Fran’s many friends who kept tabs on her. She will be forever missed and loved by those who were part of her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations of money or medical equipment may be made to the BC Red Cross Victoria Office at 909 Fairfield Road, Victoria, BC, V8V 3A3.
There will be a quiet celebration of Fran’s life for immediate family and her close friends at a later date.
