It is with sadness that we announce the death of Garnet Stanley Barlow. May 2, 1947-February 7, 2025. He is survived by his sons Charles (wife Lynn) and William, his grandchildren Madelaine, Max, Ellie and Angus, and by his nephew Aaron Barlow (wife Christine).
Born in Regina, Garnet learned strong family values and traditions, which he carried with him until the end. He met his first wife Maude at York University. After graduating, Garnet became a professor of English literature. He then worked for the House of Commons and the Senate before joining the intelligence community, where he served with distinction.
He spent 30 years married to his second wife Anne, whom he loved and cherished. They moved to Sidney, BC until Anne’s untimely death. From there he moved to Victoria and continued his passion of cycling, travelling, hiking and playing standup bass in a jazz trio.
Garnet’s legacy will live on in his generosity and in the mark he left on everyone he met. Always dressed impeccably, he went nowhere without one of his signature hats.
He cherished above all his family and friends, and occasionally the finest whiskey. So raise a glass to a larger than life man whose spirit will live on through memories of a rich life and unique sense of humour.
No memorial service planned. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.
