Giovanni (Gio) Puggioni

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Giovanni (Gio) Puggioni at the age of 60 on September 3, 2026 in Victoria, BC.

Gio met life’s challenges with a rare combination of stoicism, optimism, and unwavering positivity. He earned his degree from the University of Victoria, where his skill in debate shone as a key member of the university debate team: a talent that took him to New York for competition and previewed a lifelong gift for articulate, unflappable advocacy.

Gio embarked on a distinguished 34 year career with the BC Public Service, serving within the Ministry of Environment and Parks and the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. He rose through the ranks to retire as Executive Director for LNG and Major Projects. Throughout his career, Gio was deeply respected and loved by colleagues, industry leaders, and First Nations across British Columbia. Built on trust, humility, and genuine compassion, the strong relationships he forged left an indelible mark on reconciliation efforts throughout the province, a legacy that will endure for generations.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gio was fiercely independent, passionate, trustworthy, and generous, with a wicked sense of humour that could light up any room. He was a tireless advocate for what was right. Many of his friendships spanned decades, with bonds he nurtured through loyalty and deeply cherished throughout his life.

Gio’s analytical nature was legendary. He never made a purchase without researching every detail to ensure he made the best decision. He would share his research for the benefit of anyone interested. He was an avid hockey fan and participated for years in the Hockey Draft Sweepstakes. One of his favourite traditions was an annual Christmas bake-off with close friends, which yielded batches of delicious treats he eagerly shared with everyone around him. The chocolate chunk cookies were out of this world! He enjoyed music and good wine.   

Above all, Gio valued true relationship and connection. Early life circumstances resulted in a strong bond between the siblings. A fond memory from childhood was a road trip with his brother, Robert, and sister, Cristina, to Disneyland. As adults, he and his brother could often be found passionately debating the finer points of their shared love for cars. As a loving uncle, Gio desired above all else that the bond with his niece, Rebecca, and nephew, Roman, be rooted in genuine love and shared experiences. They adored spending time with him, whether they were battling through video games, marathoning movies, having Survivor watch parties or learning how to play poker.

Gio’s strength, warmth, and steady presence will be profoundly missed by his family, many friends, and the countless people whose lives he touched.

A celebration of life will be held in Victoria in the future to honour Gio's memory. Those wishing to honour Gio can make a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation, Victoria Hospice, or the Knights of Columbus, who were instrumental in supporting the family in the early years.
