Gordon Bailey
It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Gordon Archibald Bailey, a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and esteemed educator. Gordon passed away on May 26, 2024, in Victoria, British Columbia, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and compassion that will forever be cherished by those whose lives he touched.
Gordon was born in Montreal, Quebec, in December 1946, and throughout his life, he exemplified the values of dedication, integrity, and kindness. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue, his devoted son, Allan, his stepson, Jeff, and partner Selina, and his cherished granddaughters, Amea and Phaye. He also leaves behind his sisters, Helen and MaryLou, and their families, who will forever hold him in their hearts.
Gordon's impact on the world extended far beyond his immediate family. As a dedicated educator, he shared his passion for sociology and education with students at Capilano University in North Vancouver for eighteen years, before retiring in 2007. His influence also reached the University of Victoria, where he taught Sociology of Education for nearly a decade in the 1980s. His commitment to education knew no bounds, as he taught students from kindergarten to graduate school in Canada, Britain, Malaysia, and the United States, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Gordon was a prolific author, publishing books and articles on social theory, ideology, and education. His Tom Severn, Eco Detective Mystery series offered a unique blend of entertainment and environmental awareness, reflecting his deep concern for the world around him. His dedication to social and environmental causes was further evidenced by his arrest at the Bayview Drive Kinder Morgan site in Burnaby on May 25, 2018, where he stood up for his beliefs and was subsequently sentenced to 240 hours of community service while on six months' probation.
Gordon's life was not without its challenges, and he faced a courageous battle against aggressive lung cancer, enduring a tremendous amount of constant pain. Despite his valiant fight, he ultimately found peace on May 26, 2024, leaving behind a profound void in the lives of those who loved him. While his physical presence may be gone, his spirit and legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Gordon will be laid to rest on Pender Island, a place that held a special significance in his heart, on Saturday, June 1st, at the Pender Island Cemetery. In honor of his memory, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Council of Canadians, an organization that was close to Gordon's heart and reflects his unwavering commitment to social and environmental justice.
Gordon's passing has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. His wisdom, compassion, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were touched by his presence. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration during this difficult time, and may his legacy live on through the countless lives he has touched. Rest in peace, Gordon Archibald Bailey. You will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.
