August 25, 1957 - February 9th, 2026
Gregory (Greg) Keith Schick passed away peacefully on February 9th, 2026 in Victoria, B.C.
Greg will be forever missed by his wife of forty years, Kathleen Boland, his children Owen (Tarah) and Fiona (Mackenzie), his grandchildren Tariq and Nora, his sister Carol (Dan), sister-in-law Marilyn and many beloved extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Alma and Charlie and brother Wayne.
Greg was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, which provided him with many colourful stories he took delight in sharing. After high school he obtained a degree in planning from the University of Waterloo, and soon after, embarked on an 18 month trip around the world. This trip was meaningful and influential for Greg due to his love of geography, culture and people.
After a period of work and travel, Greg headed west to Victoria to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Administration. This is where he met Kathleen, brought together by required reading on multiple regression. Following graduation, Greg was hired by IBM, where he would work until his retirement. Shortly following their marriage Greg and Kathleen moved from Regina to Edmonton, where they would have and begin to raise their two children.
They spent 10 good years in Edmonton watching the Oilers win multiple Stanley Cups and enjoying snowy winters. But Kathleen's roots drew them back to Victoria, where Greg appreciated how easily he could grow tomatoes and begonias. Following his retirement from IBM, Greg traded in his laptop for a bicycle, and cycling would become a passion of his until his death. Through cycling, Greg met a group of men who would join together for weekly rides and coffee, with a few much longer rides to neighbouring gulf islands. His rides and socializing with “The Spokesmen” were significant for Greg and he formed close friendships with many of its members. He would usually return from these rides with enthusiastic recountings of their routes and escapades.
Due to their shared love of travel, Greg and Kathleen enjoyed many longer trips in their retirement. Greg had an exceptional memory and sense of direction, so when visiting places like Thailand, South America and Australia, he would download a map onto his tablet and easily navigate their way around.
Greg’s mind also worked in numbers and facts. His interest in the stock market, sport statistics, and where in town he could get the best grocery deals, demonstrated this. While Greg was an Oilers, Blue Jays, and Roughriders fan, he could often be found watching whatever game, in whatever sport, happened to be on at the time.
Greg loved talking to people and was always curious about the lives of those he would meet while out and about in Victoria or traveling abroad. He was a long-time member of the Victoria Athletic Club, where he enjoyed chatting to both tourists and locals, often in the steam or sauna. He also frequented the Cook St. Village Starbucks, where he could sit and socialize while observing the activity of the neighbourhood.
Family was what Greg valued most and he lived to support and provide for his family. He would often say that nothing made him happier than getting to sit down and share a meal with his family, immediate or extended, especially for a celebration dinner. He never wanted much for Christmas or Birthdays; it was time with his family that mattered most. Latterly he delighted in watching his grandson play sports and observing his baby granddaughter grow until she could say “Hi Grandpa" when she came to visit him in hospice.
We are eternally grateful to the many healthcare professionals that supported and cared for Greg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Victoria Hospice Society.
A celebration of life for Greg will be held at Victoria Golf Club on Sunday, April 19th at 1:30pm.
