In Loving Memory of Helen Eileen Harris (nee Cory)
Helen EileenHarris (nee Cory) peacefully passed away on July 29, 2023, at the remarkable age of 96. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever be held close to the hearts of those who knew her. Helen was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba to Mabel and Henry Cory on May 16, 1927. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband Cameron and her dear sister Margaret Munro, brother-in-law Allan Munro and son-in-law Stuart Greene.
Helen's life was a tapestry of love and devotion to her family. She is survived by her five loving children - Cori-Ann Greene, Dallas (Maureen) Harris, Garrett (Frances) Harris, Janet (Rocco) Catalano, and Margy (Dave) Gamble - each of whom held a special place in her heart. To her children, she was not just a mother, but also a confidante, a guiding light, and a source of unconditional love. She also leaves behind her nephew, Clarke (Noreen) Munro and niece, Carol (Arnie) Kruck.
As a grandmother, Helen exuded warmth and affection, making sure each of her 17 grandchildren felt deeply cherished. She embraced her role with joy and enthusiasm, creating lasting bonds with each of them. Beyond her grandchildren, she had the privilege of witnessing the growth of 16 1/2 great-grandchildren and 1 1/2 great-great-grandchildren, whose lives were brightened by her presence and wisdom. As a mother and grandmother, her love knew no bounds, and she devoted herself selflessly to her family, offering unwavering support and encouragement.
Helen's musical talent was a defining aspect of her life. She delighted those around her with captivating performances, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of listening to her. Helen would be featured at times singing on CBC Radio in Winnipeg and Edmonton as a solo feature or with a group she sang with in Edmonton called “The Versatiles”. Helen achieved the prestigious honor of winning the Stutchbury Cup, the top musician in the Alberta Music festival for solo in opera and best artistic performance in 1962, a testament to her musical prowess Her musical abilities brought joy and beauty to countless lives.
Beyond her musical gift, Helen was an embodiment of love and compassion. She was a loving wife who shared an unbreakable bond with her late husband, Cameron. Helen and Cam loved to travel and create new adventures and memories world wide. They would also make many family trips to Manitoba to visit Helen’s parents and sister, Margaret and family. For many years the couple belonged to the United Church where they met many lifelong friends. Helen was always part of the church choirs and would often be leading the choirs or would be a featured soloist. When Helen and Cam moved to Victoria, Helen began working at the University of Victoria where she stayed employed for over 20 years. She also very much enjoyed being a part of a musical group called “The Melodears” as they performed at least once a month in and around Victoria. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Helen was also an exceptional cook, and her culinary creations delighted the taste buds of her family and friends.
The Harris family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Broadmead Lodge for the exceptional care and support they provided to Helen during her time there. Their compassion and dedication brought comfort to Helen and her family, for which they will always be remembered.
In the hearts of those who loved her, Helen's memory will forever shine bright. She
touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and musical harmony. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that she will be dearly missed but never forgotten
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to The Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Helen’s memory.
