Helen Tait Obituary

October 30, 1962 – January 2, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Roberta Tait, who left us peacefully on January 2, 2026, in Victoria, British Columbia, at the age of 63.

Helen will be lovingly remembered by her sons Nick Fruci (Shawna) and Michael Fruci (Anthony); her niece Jennifer Yanow (Tyler); her sister Julie Tait; and many extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Robert Tait and Lillias Wade, and her brother John Tait.

Helen was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer in 2020 at the start of the pandemic—an especially difficult time to receive such news, as public health restrictions limited connection during one of the hardest periods of her life. Despite this, Helen persevered with grace and strength, showing remarkable resilience through five and a half challenging years. She was supported by her friends and family, who surrounded her with love and encouragement throughout her journey.

Born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, Helen later moved to Calgary and Toronto, beginning a varied and meaningful career in education and public service before returning to North Bay to start a family. She worked for many years at Nipissing University, where she also earned her BA and BEd degrees. Helen dedicated her professional life to both paid and volunteer work across the private, public, and non-profit sectors.

After more than 25 years at Nipissing, and following several visits to Victoria, Helen made a courageous decision to sell her home and leave North Bay winters behind. She moved west in 2012 to begin a new chapter in Victoria, British Columbia, close to her son Michael. There, she worked with Leadership Victoria and Camosun College, where she formed lasting friendships and continued to make a meaningful impact.

In her personal time, Helen loved antiquing and thrifting, writing, and photography. She found meaningful peace being near the ocean and walking through lush forests. Her favourite place was Tofino, where she felt most at home.

Helen will be remembered for her love of friendship and, above all, for the time she spent with her sons, who were her greatest source of pride, joy, and laughter. She cherished family game nights and holiday celebrations and will be remembered as kind, generous, warm-hearted, and genuine.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many friends and loved ones who supported Helen over the past five years, as well as to her dedicated medical team throughout Victoria, especially the staff at BC Cancer – Victoria and the Victoria Hospice Society, for their compassionate care.
