The Daughters of Helen Mudie Wilson are saddened to announce their Mother's passing on April 13, 2020 at Victoria, BC. A New Year's baby, Helen was born in rural Alberta and was the second youngest of 13 children. After high school, she and her youngest sister Betty traveled to Vancouver for nursing training. While Betty went on to complete her training, Helen met the love of her life and decided her life path would lead her to be a wife and mother to four daughters. Married to John (Mort) Mudie in 1953, their lives took them to towns small and large throughout British Columbia and Washington State. One adventure took them overseas to Iran for a year then they returned to Canada and found home in Langley, BC. Following Mort's life changing accident in 1983, with Helen's "keep calm and carry on" manner, retirement became their new life. Helen's love of the sun had them looking south to Arizona and they became official Snowbirds. Helen's love of the sun also had them move to the Okanagan to maximize the year round heat. After Mort's passing in 1994, Helen continued to travel to Yuma every winter. She met her second husband at Country Roads Park and was married to Charles (Chuck) Wilson in 2003. Chuck and Helen lived in Aberdeen, Washington until 2019 when medical needs required they leave their home and move into separate care. Helen returned to Canada in late 2019 to Victoria, BC to be closer to her family until her passing. Friends of Helen knew her as highly sociable with a love for dancing and classic country music. Her quick sense of humour was always a surprise as she launched unexpected zingers to make those around her laugh out loud. She was a long time member of Beta Sigma Phi and was President of her Chapter in Langley. A particularly proud moment for her was when she received a Woman of the Year award for her service. Later, in Yuma, she joined the Red Hat Society, which was right up her alley. Helen was always up for participating in parades and plays and was an enthusiastic member of garden clubs as gardening was one of her life passions. At age 90, she took on the task of planting the gardens at West Haven Villa in Aberdeen. Helen was always the first to arrive for scheduled activities and had no fear in trying new things.
Family of Helen knew her as Mom, Aunty, Granny and Great. Looking back, her daughters remember her as Super Mom, teaching them all about sewing and crafting, baking and gardening. Each took her lessons to heart and each excelled in different areas and that was OK with her. Every Monday was bread day, and Mom would bake all the bread the family would need for the week. One of her claims to fame was winning $500 in the Five Roses Flour Sweepstakes in the 60's. Mom was always a helper with her daughters' activities - a 4H and Explorer Leader - and attended every school concert without fail. Even as adults Mom was a great resource, always ready with tomato growing tips and recipe exchanges. Her love of sports, particularly Seattle Seahawks football, was another connection where we could picture her in her Wilson #3 jersey and expect a full recount of game highlights and fumbles.
Helen Mudie Wilson is survived by her husband Chuck, daughters Wendy (Greg), Janice (Wes), Gail (Rob) and Patti (Randy), her grandchildren Karla, Greg (Tine), Robert, Jennifer, Drew (Andy) and Landyn, great grandchildren Colton, Sadie, Alex, Andrew, Taylor, Brandon, Alyssa, Myrthe and Flora, great-great grandchild Esra, siblings Ed (Nellie), Pete and Betty and numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be missed - we all love you.
