Hank was born on March 10, 1932 and lived in Amsterdam, Holland until World War II erupted. He was separated from his family and sent to a farm for safety and in order to have access to fresh food. One of his jobs included peeling potatoes for the family - as a result, he could peel potatoes with a knife faster than anyone with a peeler. After the war, Hank finished his schooling and trained as an electrician, welder and banker. His interests were sailing, swimming, water polo, skating on the canals (where he met his future bride), and sailing. After his engagement to Diedricha Remmelts, he immediately boarded a merchant ship as a Purser and sailed the world for seven years. He later said, " I've seen many corners of the world and I'll save you a million dollars in trying to find the perfect place because it doesn't get any better than Victoria". Hank emigrated from Amsterdam, Holland in 1957 directly after his marriage to Diedricha on January 25. They travelled by steamship as part of their honeymoon to Halifax, Nova Scotia, before boarding a train to Vancouver, where they initially settled. Hank worked at the bank in Vancouver, switched to BA Oil in Calgary, before discovering Victoria for the fishing. He began working as a financial planner while in Calgary and continued his successful career in Victoria, after moving here in 1969. His true passion was always on the water fishing for salmon. He began his own charter fishing business in the 80's and spent countless hours on the waters of Sidney, the breakwater and Sooke. In his spare time, he smoked salmon, read many books and played pool. Hank was an excellent swimmer, participating in water polo and volunteering as a canal life guard in Holland. In Victoria, he could be found at Panorama Leisure Centre three times a week.
In later years, Hank enjoyed time with his fishing friends and playing with his grandchildren. His favourite places were the pool, Beacon Hill Park putting green, the dock on Elk Lake, Joanna's house and the Dutch Bakery.
Hank will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
