Hugh died peacefully October 6 at Victoria, BC. Born in Cadomin, Alberta, Hugh moved to Edmonton at 13 years old. He completed his schooling at University High School and graduated in Agriculture from the University of Alberta in 1952. He farmed for a few years before undertaking one year as Project Director to set up the University Ranch at Kinsella for Dr. Roy Berg a lifelong friend. He became a farm manager for Milner Farms, moving on to manage a Milner enterprise in Lethbridge, returning to manage the University Farm, leaving for a few years to operate a private partnership consulting and importing farm stock most notably introducing the Finnish Landrace Sheep to Canada. During this time he travelled extensively throughout the world including a visit to the Galapagos Islands and Peru. He returned to the University as an Administrative Professional Officer responsible for all off-campus facilities of the Faculty of Agriculture including the Edmonton Research Farm. He ended his professional career as Field Director for Ag Canada of the 70,000 acre Tanzania-Canada Wheat Project in Africa. During his 3 years in Africa, he was able to summit Mount Kilimanjaro accompanied by his son Howard and daughter-in-law Marilyn. Following his return, he spent 7 years on his farm in the County of Strathcona, moving into Edmonton in 1997 and then to Victoria in 2010. He served his profession as Secretary-Treasurer of the Feed Manufacturers Assoc., National Director for the Alberta Institute of Agrologists, and Vice-President of the Agricultural Institute of Canada. After retirement, he was heavily involved with the Ministik Wild Life Station and the Tofield Nature Centre and Beaverhill Lake wild geese tours. He was President of the Southeast Edmonton Seniors Centre. He was a founding member and Past President of the Edmonton Bird Club, amassing an extensive life long bird list and enjoyed bike riding, pool, climbing, hiking and bridge. He married Sheila Shand in 1953 and they celebrated their 60th Anniversary in his beloved Alberta mountains in July. He is survived by three sons, Howard (Marilyn), Duncan (Maria Elena), Michael and one daughter Anne, grandsons Jeff, Luke, Cheyvez, granddaughters Deedee, Ali, Ashlee, Emily, Teesha, and Shayna, and 6 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Bruce and sister Jean. Hugh is buried at Victoria, BC. To leave a condolence or make adonation please click on tab(s) above.
