Jack Anderson

d. August 14, 2016

After persevering through a lengthy illness, Jack passed away at the Victoria General Hospital, with his wife Bea, and a long-time family friend, by his side. Jack was a loyal and generous friend to many people, including contemporaries and younger folk. He always went the extra mile to pitch in and help out, to tell or listen to a story, and to play and share a joke. Curious and scholarly, Jack was a lifelong learner. And he valued a good debate! Jack was born in Arelee, Saskatchewan, and welcomed into a farming family and way of life by his parents, George and Mary. He was the third child in a family of five. He attended the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950 and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1951.
Jack's early life careers included working for an oil exploration company in Calgary, Alberta, and for a geophysical company in Houston, Texas. He met and married Bea in Calgary, in 1959. In that same year, following the death of his father, Jack took his bride ‘home' to Saskatchewan. Together, Jack and Bea operated a mixed farming operation - growing grain and developing a herd of Charolais cattle.
In 1971, retirement offered opportunities to visit with many friends and to travel and meet new friends, along with a continuation of some farming-related activities and interests. In 1985, Jack and Bea decided that they would call Victoria, B.C., home. Wisely, however, they developed a tradition of ‘wintering' in warmer climes, such as California and Hawaii. Over the years, Jack took time to contribute to the community through his active interest in politics. In retirement, he continued his lifetime interest in archaeology, collecting and researching native artifacts. He also spent many happy and industrious hours discovering, collecting and rehabilitating tools with a history! And in the inviting climate of Victoria, he became an enthusiastic and successful gardener. Jack will be missed by his dear wife, Bea, and by all his friends with whom he shared interests and experiences. By personal request, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation.
