Jack Long
December 8, 1936 — June 18, 2019
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of forever-loved husband, father and friend, John (Jack) William Long.
Jack passed away on June 18
th
, 2019 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria BC, surrounded by loving family and friends.
Jack leaves to lovingly cherish his memory his wife Pauline, daughter Lesley (Will), son Cameron (Kelly) and grandson Griffin, as well as lifelong friends LesDefossesand the Kinneard family (John, Dyala, Jennifer, Stephanie and Phillip). Jack is predeceased by his parents Bill and Irene Long, and sister Dorothy (Fred) Mockford.
Jack was born on December 8
th
, 1936 in Clearwater, BC. As a young boy he learned the importance of helping the community through watching and assisting his parents run Long's General Store in the small town of Clearwater. The family later moved to Kamloops where Jack attended Kamloops Secondary, eventually settling in Victoria, BC, where Jack apprenticed as an electrician at Yarrow's shipyard. Jack met and fell in love with his wife Pauline in Victoria; after marrying they moved to Nanaimo to start a family. There Jack became a motor winder and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, an organization he was a proud member of throughout his entire working days. In the early 1970s, Jack and Pauline, now with two young children, moved to the mainland where he was employed by WL Stevens in Burnaby for the remainder of his working life. Jack truly loved his job as an electrician, and when asked in his later years what he'd like to go back and do again in his life, his immediate answer was that he'd love to return to his days as a winder. Jack was also an active Boy Scouts leader for many years, and devoted much enthusiasm and energy to coaching and umpiring numerous baseball and soccer teams. Sadly, a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 60 forced Jack into early retirement.
Jack will be forever remembered for his strong work ethic, known at work as the guy who was, in the words of a longtime work colleague and close friend, "well respected in the shop because he was a hard worker and would take on whatever job came up, big or small, clean or incredibly dirty." Jack will also be lovingly remembered by all who knew him for his ability to bring levity to life's many challenges with his unflappable positive outlook on life and particular brand of mischievous, occasionally âoff-colour'sense of humour.
The family wishes to thank the staff who cared for him and the residents who showed him friendship during his three years at Aberdeen Hospital, as well as the staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital who provided care to Jack and support to the family during his final days.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held on Sunday October 27
