James Irwin Lloyd

James Irwin Lloyd, born in Port Arthur, Ontario, August 17, 1965, died March 1, 2026, in Sooke, BC. James was named for his grandfather who died in WW11.

While serving in the Canadian Navy on board HMCS Fraser and HMCS Nipigon, as very young man, Jim suffered a “traumatic injury”. Jim woke up during the initial surgery and powerful pain medications followed, and over the next almost 4 decades several more surgeries and more pain medications. PTSD was a certainty. Jim became addicted and he tried successfully several times to clean up. Finally, Jim was left with 3 of 4 limbs damaged. His latest surgery was December 11, and more were ahead for him. Veterans Affairs denied assistance. The new VA policy came far too late for him. In the last 6 months of his life, Jim became homeless.

Jim loved chocolate milk, fig cookies, ice cream, peanut butter cookies and was himself a good cook.  Jim was intelligent, honest, a good man and a hard worker -Marine Engineering, Stationary Engineering, plumbing, industrial conveyor belting for paper mills and mines, class A truck driver with many miles and a clear abstract, and lastly construction work with Knappett Projects. His initial injury and subsequent surgeries interrupted his employment over and over again, and he suffered sleep deprivation for many years.

Jim is survived by his mother, Gloria Anne Lloyd, Sooke, BC and his absent father, Terry Lloyd, Thunder Bay, Ontario (currently palliative). Jim’s greatest sorrow was being alienated from his daughter, Skylee and granddaughter, Trinity, who live in Alberta.

Family members include aunts and uncles -Davis Bourque, Edmonton; Eileen Kristiansen, Sooke, Wayne Bourque, Sooke; Robert and Mary Anne Bourque, Victoria; Paul Bourque, Manitoba; Lenda Bourque, Ottawa. Jim had 12 surviving nieces and nephews.

To those who tried to assist Jim, especially Joanne and Kim, and Thomas at Sooke Family Resource, thank you.

There will be no service. Jim’s heartbroken mother will miss him forever.
