Newby, Joan Marianne (nee Baker)

May 12, 1927 – June 16, 2023

It is with deep sadness the family of Joan Newby announces her death on June 16, 2023. Joan died peacefully, surrounded by her family. She was pre-deceased by her brother Charles Baker and his wife Margaret. Joan will be dearly missed by her husband of 70 years, Jim, her daughter Ann (Haig), her son Rod (Emi), her three grandchildren Ari, Sarah (Thomas) and Emma (Jake) to whom she was a loving Nanny, and her nieces, nephews and their families. Special thanks to niece Donna and her husband Don Chadsey who have always been so caring and helpful.

Joan was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta May 12, 1927. After graduating from high school, she worked for the Bank of Montreal for a number of years. In 1952, she married Jim and moved to Edmonton, where she built many wonderful life-long friendships and connections. Joan was a member of the Anglican Parish of Christ Church (Edmonton). She also volunteered for the Royal Alexandra Hospital Auxiliary for many years and was a Life Member. One of her greatest joys was spending her summers at Ma-Me-O Beach with the family, a tradition that began with her parents when she was a young child. Joan was also a passionate and knowledgeable sports fan, who loved to cheer on her Edmonton Eskimos and Oilers. In 2013, she and Jim moved to Victoria where she resided at Carlton House until her death. Joan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a dear and loyal friend to many. She had a wonderful sense of humour, was full of grace, dignity and style and she will remain in our hearts forever. Many thanks to the staff of Carlton House for their support and kindness.

Rest well, with our love.
