Born in Wernegerode, Germany, in the Hartz Mountains, Johanne moved with her family to Saskatchewan when she was two for ten years before moving back to Germany with the family. She survived WW2 as a teenager, and, after much planning, escaped communist East Germany in 1951 for Canada to begin a new life. She was followed later by her mom and fiancé, Erich, whom she met while living in Wernigerode, and married shortly after. Johanne was also lovingly called “Jo, Hunni, Mom, Grandma and Omi” in her circle of friends and family. Known for her cooking several people would try to convince her to open a restaurant but she was a family first person. She enjoyed horseback riding, early morning swims, quilting and a variety of other crafts.
