John Arthur David Eddy

John Arthur David Eddy, 97, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, June 8, 2016 at Broadmead Lodge in Victoria BC.
John was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on May 5, 1919, son of Jack Quick Eddy and Loretta (Dowling) Eddy. He grew up and attended school in Port Arthur, now Thunder Bay. In 1940, he joined the First Special Service Force, a joint Canadian and US commando unit and served with this unit in Italy in WWII. In 2013, he was awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal for his active service in the FSSF.
After the war he worked as a carpenter and was doing construction in Prince Rupert, BC where he met his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Nicholson. John and Dorothy were married in Nelson, BC on January 29, 1947 and settled in Thunder Bay, raising a family of eleven children. John worked for Provincial Paper in Port Arthur for 32 years and retired and moved to Victoria, BC in 1981.
John is predeceased by his wife Dorothy Phyllis Eddy and son Jim Nicholson Eddy and daughter Margaret Rose Eddy. John is survived by his nine children Mary (Victor) of West Vancouver; John Eddy (Olivia), Christine Thomson (David), Elizabeth Edwards (Bill), Phyllis Holdsworth (Chris) and Kenneth Eddy of Calgary; Robert Eddy (Sharon) and Philip Eddy (Suzanne) of Thunder Bay; Herman Eddy of Victoria who has provided loving support for many years. John also leaves 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and his brother James Eddy and family of Toronto. John really enjoyed and will be remembered for his many cross Canada road trips to visit family and friends.
John and the family where active members of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Thunder Bay and later Holy Cross Church in Victoria. John was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 5, Port Arthur and a volunteer driver for the Cancer Society in Victoria for 15 years.
