John David Herbert
1935 – 2023
With great sadness we announce the death of John David Herbert on July 3rd, 2023.
John is predeceased by his parents Frederick Howard Herbert and Elsie Mable Herbert and his elder brother Fred.
John leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 61 years, Ann, along with his three children, Sherrill (Anthony), Jacquie (Craig) and Greg (Lan) and three grandchildren, Oliver, Sofia and Asher. John is also survived by his sisters-in-law Adele Herbert and Isabelle Skolrood and their families, and the family of his sister-in-law Daphne Robertson.
John grew up on Blenkinsop Road in Saanich, BC, attending Doncaster Elementary and the original Mount Doug Secondary School. John completed a Commerce degree at UBC in 1962. While living in Vancouver, he met his next-door neighbour Ann; they were married in 1961.
John worked for five years at Peat Marwick (now KPMG) in Vancouver, where he became a Chartered Accountant. When the opportunity to transfer to Victoria arose, he jumped at the chance.
He was proud to be a Chartered Accountant and provided his sound, practical advice to numerous entities throughout government, including the BC Municipal Pension Plan and various health authorities. He also served as chairman of the Senior Financial Officer’s board for provincial ministries.
In total, John spent 35 years in government. In retirement, he was on Oak Bay council for 15 years where he strived to be fair and non-partisan in his decision making.
John and Ann lived together in Oak Bay for 56 years. In his spare time, John enjoyed woodworking, time at his Piers Island cottage and numerous trips to Europe. He always enjoyed socializing with numerous friends from school, work and retirement days.
John was a loyal friend, a dedicated public servant and, above all, a proud father and grandfather who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family.
