Peacefully on June 30, 2017, Dad left us while surrounded by many of those who loved him. Born on July 5, 1946 in Nanaimo, BC, Dad spent most of his life making Victoria his home. John was predeceased by his parents Jack (1985) and Mary (2003). He is survived by his beloved wife Donna (nee Dunaway) of 49 years plus a day. He was always proud of his children Angela (Anthony), Deana (Allen) and Reid (Nicole) and their many accomplishments, even slip-ups on their journeys through life. He was known by several names including JR, Elvis, Hunter, but his most treasured name was Papa John. He was a wonderful grand-father to seven grandchildren whom adored him; Brittany, Michael, Megan, Isabella, Cameron, Bradlee and Kaedence. And we can't forget his grand dogs: Carter, Parker, Chloe and Boston. He was also cherished by numerous nieces, nephews and his in-laws. Papa John was an avid outdoorsman who appreciated hunting and fishing. He also loved coaching us kids in our sports, and watching his grandkids from the sidelines. Although we know he loved us all dearly, his pride and joy remained his much-loved 1964 Chevy Impala. He was a truck driver all his life who from his early years relished working on vehicles. He was always willing to lend a hand when needed when it came to assisting with a car repair or coming to our aid in a time of need.
Growing up, we remember Dad always being a member of a club which included Camosun Masonic Lodge, RCL #7 Britannia, Saanich Warriors Oldtimers Hockey Club, Ambulance crew at Western Speedway, Lions Club of Saanich, Layritz Little League and Island Equipment Owners Association.
Dad lived his life his way. As an icebreaker or in conversations, he would often use one of his token "Hunterisms".
We will all miss you but will always cherish the memories and time we had together. We would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Victoria Hospice who were amazing during Dad's 6 week stay.
A reception to greet family and friends and remember his life will be announced at a later date.
