Obituary

John Bertram Larkin, 88, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, in Sidney, British Columbia.

Born on September 15, 1937, in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, John's life was shaped by a deep connection to the sea and a steadfast dedication to his work and family. He pursued his education at St. Dunstan’s University (now the University of Prince Edward Island) before embarking on a lifelong career as a hydrographer with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

In the early years of his profession, John relished the opportunity to travel aboard survey vessels to destinations as varied as the Caribbean and the high Arctic. His work took him across vast waters and remote coastlines, mapping and studying marine environments with precision and care. In 1971, he and his family relocated from Ottawa to Vancouver Island—a move that marked the beginning of his long tenure at the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney. There, he continued his important work until retirement, contributing significantly to Canada’s understanding of its coastal waters.

John served in the Canadian Army, with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, from 1956 to 1958. In later years, he performed many voluntary acts for St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Parish, despite his deep Presbyterian faith. His volunteering included sitting on Parish Council, raising funds for a new church building, and helping with the construction of the new church. His devotion and self-sacrifice were an inspiration to family, friends and many in the community.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man who found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful connections. He curled for many years with both family and friends—always more interested in camaraderie than competition. Win or lose, he cherished the post-game gatherings over drinks and laughter.

After retiring, John and his beloved wife Sharon embraced their shared love of travel. They explored countless ports aboard cruise ships, journeying from sun-drenched Caribbean islands to Australia and New Zealand to icy Arctic shores. One memorable trip was a 2018 vacation to Mexico with Sharon, Sean, Linda and Dan. A particular memory involved Nana and Grandpa up on stage competing in wacky events! They didn’t win, but seemed to be the crowd favourite! These adventures brought them great joy and lasting memories.

John also had a passion for sports and stories. He was an enthusiastic follower of NASCAR racing and rarely missed a BC Lions game during CFL season. A lover of mysteries—both in print and on screen—he especially enjoyed works by British authors like Agatha Christie.

At the heart of John's life was his devotion to family. He treasured time spent together during celebrations and meals, finding happiness in the presence of those he loved most.

John is survived by his wife Sharon, his sister Jane and her husband Donnie, and his children Sean and Linda and her husband Dan. John was proud of and loved his grandchildren Sarah and her partner Andrew, Stephanie and her husband Ryan, Daniel, Olivia, Noah and his friend Kathryn, as well as extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, Gladys and Bertram.

Sharon and the family would like to extend thanks to the Palliative Care unit of Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their wonderful and caring service. We would also like to thank the doctors who cared for John over the years. In particular, we would like to thank Dr. Metcalfe, Dr. Pathak, Dr. Hardy, Dr. McIver and Dr. McNaughton. We also appreciate the ongoing assistance from Nightingale Medical Supplies.
