Jonathan Barrington Beare

May 10, 1974 — October 5, 2023

Jonathan was born in Toronto and received his education at Upper Canada College and Western

University. He was active in many sports, and in high school became passionate about rowing,

eventually competing in three Olympics and winning a Bronze medal in Beijing. After retirement from

competition he served as the Athlete Director for the Rowing Canada Board. He subsequently became a

partner in Hudson Boat Works, a leading maker of rowing shells, and contributed to its substantial

growth. And it was through rowing that he met Danielle, the love of his life. His manner was calm and

open, he was intellectually curious and invariably positive, and he was a great friend to his many friends.

A beloved partner in life to Danielle, a cherished and super supportive father to Mya and Rhys, a source

of great pride to his parents John and the late Janny Beare, and a wonderful brother to Michael and

Kimberley. Taken from us much too soon by colorectal cancer, which he faced with courage and

acceptance. With thanks to the doctors and nurses in palliative care at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in

Victoria. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to https://www.victoriahf.ca/donaterjh/ or

We want to begin by thanking you for the global outpouring of love that Mya, Rhys, and our family have received this past year, and particularly with Jon’s passing on Thursday. We feel supported in every way we can imagine.

Jon did spend time considering how we might celebrate his life. Rather than having a formal service, he hoped that you would gather with your loved ones, pour your favourite drink, play some nice music, and share good memories.

Reflecting his wishes, several pods are forming around the world, and you are encouraged to create your own as well.

This Saturday, October 14th at 3pm, you can join with others in watching Craig McAllistair, our dear friend, offer thoughts on the time we enjoyed with Jon. We hope you can join us for the Celebration of Jon Beare. If you wish to share your own, we look forward to collecting them through this condolence site.

Your offers of support have been incredibly generous. Please know that we are well fed, well visited, and well loved. We are grateful.
