Joseph Michael 'Mike' Hilts

Joseph Michael Hilts passed away at Victoria Hospice on June 10, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 73. Mike is survived by his loving wife Sharon of 51 years, daughters Suzanne Clark and Jaimie Hilts, brothers Drew Hilts (Tricia), Ross Hilts, sister Leslie Hilts Longworth and his two grandchildren Marlee and Hannah Clark. He is fondly remembered by Sharon's brothers Larry Scruton (Dawna), Dan Scruton (Cheryl), her sisters Linda Fairbairn (Larry), Barbara Scruton and by her mother Norma Scruton - who is in her 99th year, as well as by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mike was born in Vancouver, BC October 21st 1942. He graduated from Como Lake High School and went on to work with the Royal Bank and then Christie Brown & Co (where he was transferred to N.S.) Always ready to try new things, after the happy arrival of their first daughter Suzanne, Mike and Sharon moved to Pender Island where they built their own home and welcomed their second daughter Jaimie. Mike had many successful business ventures on the Gulf Islands including an excavation company, service centre and gas station, and eventually a career with School District 64 that spanned from school bus driver to IT Technician. Computers were one of Mike's many passions, and he was happy to share his skills and knowledge with friends, family and neighbors. Sure to be remembered for his generous nature, Mike was always ready to help, he spent many years on his building's Strata Council when he retired to Victoria, BC. Mike's love of sports started early when he was the pitcher for his little league team; he also enjoyed going to the movies and spending time with his family. At Mike's request, there will be no service. Memorial donations may be made to the Victoria Hospice Society; Mike's family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers there, and also the Community Nurses from Royal Oak Health, for their care and compassion during Mike's long illness.
