Joseph Patrick Willson August 18th, 1965 - January 17th, 2026

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Joseph Patrick Willson, beloved father, brother, friend, writer, and chef, on the morning of January 17th, 2026.

Joseph was born in Burlington, Ontario, on August 18, 1965, but if you asked him where ‘home’ was he would tell you that it was Victoria, BC. He was a talented Journeyman Chef who dedicated much of his life connecting with others through food and working in kitchens.

Joseph loved to write. He had always been more quiet, often observing the world around him and using his lived experiences as inspiration for his writing. He was sarcastic and serious, but he also was silly - loving colouring books and wearing pink. Joseph loved being a father, saying his greatest achievements in life were his daughter, Rhiannon, and his sobriety.

As an author, writing under the name J.P. Willson, he published two books (Through the Mind's Eye: A Journey of Self-Discovery, & How to Become a Successful (recovering) Alcoholic) outlining his experiences as a recovering alcoholic. Joseph courageously shared his own story of addiction, as well the ups and downs he experienced along the road to recovery with the hope that his writing would inspire others to enjoy a life of sobriety.

In May 2025 Joseph had recently reached 10 years sober, a milestone we will always be so proud of and grateful for. Joseph passed peacefully and sober, which we know would have meant so much to him.

If you want to celebrate Joseph, eat something yummy or take a walk through his favourite place, Beacon Hill Park. You may also make a donation in his honour to the Salvation Army Vancouver Harbour Light where he was able to get a second chance at life or any addictions support charity in your area.
