Joyce Diane Kopan

It is with sadness that we announce that Joyce Diane Kopan passed away all too soon on December 18th, 2023, in Victoria, B.C. Joyce was born on November 3rd, 1957, in Theodore Saskatchewan. Although born in Saskatchewan, Joyce spent most of her life in Victoria, B.C. The Kopan family, including Joyce, were founding members of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Victoria and the Veselka Ukrainian Dancers. Joyce’s pivotal role was accompanying the dancers on her flute. A true Ukrainian, Joyce enjoyed kielbasa, perogies, and cabbage rolls as some of her last meals.

Joyce attended the University of Victoria and in 1980 started her career as a high school music teacher. During her 25+ years as a teacher and music program director at Belmont Secondary, Joyce was intensely dedicated to local music programs. She spent tireless hours teaching and inspiring students to create magnificent showcases. Their performances were of the highest caliber and earned the students and Belmont’s music program many awards over the years. Joyce’s efforts gained recognition and praise from students, parents, colleagues, and superiors alike. Her legacy and passion live on in many of her former students, student teachers, and musicians in Victoria and beyond.

In retirement, Joyce loved travelling, watching sports, gardening, taking in live music, hosting friends for a drink, and spoiling her pets. Joyce, known to many as ‘Kopan’, will always be remembered for her unique and “spicy” personality and sense of humour. Friends, family, and students will treasure many memories of Joyce’s positive and joyful impact on their lives and her capacity to be a listening ear and supportive presence. She was deeply loved and will truly be missed.
