A tiny yellow bird, a garland of tobacco roses on your chest. Sage, sears my nostrils, It fills the room, the drummer sings an ancient song, While ancestors shuffle in. At peace they say, she is at peace. I wonder though, where you have gone, Tecumseh's daughter, warrioress? Are you finally in that cabin, Crackling fire, books to the ceiling? A basket of leather and beads at your feet. Are the ancestors there, with all their stories? Of how, you were left, so black and blue, Does it make sense now, I wonder? Gitche Manitou keeps all our tears in a bottle, A sweet offering, the price of love, Poured out, the great mystery revealed to you. Sherry Leigh Williams
