It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad, Ken, after a battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully with the compassionate support of Dr. Konia Trouton from West Coast Assisted Dying, on Monday September 25th 2017 at the Victoria Jubilee hospital, at the age of 64. Dad was born on December 14th 1952 in Vancouver BC, a first child to Joan Marie Hutchison. Joan passed away when he was just 8 years old, shortly after his younger siblings were born. Unfortunately this loss separated Dad from his brother and sister and they weren't reunited again until 20 years later. From his young teenage years he spent most of his life on Vancouver Island, with Nanaimo being the place that he always referred to as home.
In 1973 he became a dad with the birth of Terra and in 1981 his 2nd daughter Amber was born. There is no denying that he loved us very much and always tried his hardest to be a good father. In the mid 1970s he trained in forestry and spent the next 25 years as a logger. He worked in numerous camps throughout the west coast of British Columbia and was recognized as being an experienced and proficient faller.
In 2000, he decided to make a career change and focus his energy on helping others, so he went back to school and became a certified counsellor. In 2002 he made a courageous life change and moved to Ontario, where he lived for the next 13 years.
In February 2015 Dad made the decision to move back to Nanaimo to be closer to family and friends. He quit his job, sold nearly everything, packed up his 'plum crazy' Dodge Charger (his baby) and made the long drive back home... and we are so happy that he did.
He was the type of man that would give the shirt off his back for others and never asked for anything in return. This continued even after his passing, as one of his final gifts was to have his beautiful blue eyes donated - a gift that will help up to 12 people. He maintained his brilliantly executed sense of humour right until the very end and quickly became one of the nurses favorites.
The memories he leaves us with only slightly diminish the pain in our hearts that we feel at this time, but we know that he is in a better place. He is finally free from a lifetime of hurt and able to watch over us and guide us along our own journeys.
Dad leaves behind his brother Bob and sister Jennifer, daughters Terra (Chris) and Amber (Shane), and 4 beautiful grandchildren Sarah, Emily, Mila and Tavin, as well as many extended family and close friends. You are gone, but never far away.... You finally have your freedom We would love to hear your memories and stories of our dad, so please feel free to share this page with others who may have been fortunate enough to meet him In lieu of flowers, we ask that a donation be made to a charity of your choice or a tree be planted in his honour.
