It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laverne Mary Munroe (Chaisson) on July 9, 2026, at the age of 65.
Laverne was born in De Grau, Newfoundland, to Thomas and Cecelia Chaisson. One of 18 children, she was the youngest daughter in the family. At the age of 17, Laverne and her sister Ruth moved to Halifax, NS, to live with their older sister Penny and begin a new chapter in their lives.
It was in Halifax that Laverne met her husband, Kevin Munroe. They married in 1989 and welcomed their only child, Cora. Not long afterward, Kevin joined the military to provide stability for his family. His service took the family first to Shelburne, NS, then to Kingston, ON, before eventually settling in Victoria, BC in 1997.
Laverne was a housekeeping supervisor for many hotels on the Island over the years and developed many strong relationships. However, the Days Inn was her favourite and held a special place in her heart. Those who knew Laverne could always feel comfortable and be themselves around her, and felt happiness when she was present. She had an infectious laugh, and when you heard it, you just started laughing along.
Laverne had a huge part in her grandkids’ lives, Angel and Little Man. They were her world, her everything. We will remember many fun Christmases with Grandma and the loads of presents she would bring to our home, and how she would sleep over on Christmas Eve. Before her diagnosis, she travelled with Nia to Hawaii for two weeks, where they shared precious memories and enjoyed lots of yummy food.
Laverne leaves behind her daughter, Cora; her son-in-law, Kevin; grandchildren, Nia and Roman; sisters Leona (Raymond), Joan (Arnold), Patsy, Hughina, Eileen, Regina (Dennis), Ruth, Anna (Bob), and Trixie (Chris); and brothers Leonard (Evelyn), Tom (Carolyn), Murdock (Loretta), Don, and Lawrence (Linda). She also leaves behind 57 nieces and nephews, 88 great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins.
Laverne was predeceased by her mother, Cecelia, and father, Thomas; sisters Cecelia and Penny; brothers Roderick, Clay, and Norman; brother-in-law David; and niece Sarah-Jane.
Laverne will be deeply missed by her family, friends, her girlfriend Kathy, and all those whose lives were enriched by her presence.
