Lawrence 'Larry' Resnick

Larry Resnick, Professor Emeritus of Simon Fraser University, died peacefully in Victoria, BC at the end of January 2017. He is survived by Helen, his beloved wife of nearly 67 years, his three children, and three grandchildren. Born in 1928, in New York City, Larry grew up in Ithaca, NY. He served in Japan with the US Occupying Forces in 1946, and then returned to Cornell University, where he met his future wife in a physics class. The two eloped on their graduation weekend, in the summer of 1950. They designed and built a house in Ithaca, and Larry attended graduate school at Cornell, receiving his PhD in philosophy in 1956. He taught at Lafayette College in Easton, PA and at the State University of New York. In 1973 he became the Chair of the Philosophy Department at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. Larry loved the academic life, and is remembered for his lively, engaging Socratic->On his retirement in 1993, he and Helen moved to Vancouver Island and designed and built a house on Willis Point with views of the water and mountains. Larry was active in the BC Civil Liberties Union and the Willis Point Community Association.
Helen and Larry moved to Parkwood place, a retirement home in Victoria in 2016. Larry loved life, and he never lost his optimistic outlook, or his sense of humor. He is fondly remembered by many new friends at Parkwood. Larry will also be missed by his children, Nancy, Kia and Michael, his grandchildren, Sita, Elizabeth and Jack, his brother Alan and his family, and his great grandson, Kaori. There will be a family-only memorial. Donations can be made in his memory to the American Civil Liberties Union, one of its Canadian counterparts, or to Smile Train.
