Leonard “Len Desjarlais

November 28, 1931 — July 11, 2012

Leonard Harry Desjarlais, age 80, left us July 11, 2012 at Victoria Royal Jubilee Hospital after a his brave battle with cancer. He was born November 28, 1931 in St. Lazare, Manitoba. Len (Fox) is survived by his partner and wife of 53 years, Dolly and their five children, Len Jr, Marvin, Michael, Corinne, and Denise (predeceased). He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Morgan, Graham, Isiah, Anna Jean and Kasinda and one great grandchild, Ryder. He is survived by his brothers, Norval, Lawrence, Renee, Roy and his sister, Patricia. Predeceased by his Father, Joseph Desjarlais and Mother, Claira (nee, Gregory) and brothers, Albert and Chap. Family visits and gatherings were always welcomed away, and in their home. Papa's bannock always brought a smile to everyone's face and tummies. He loved showing up for gatherings with a warm, yummy fresh baked basket of bread. Len was a Veteran and served from 1951 until 1964, this included the Korean War. He was a proud and active member of the Korean Veterans Association (KVA) of Canada and the National Aboriginal Veterans Association. He was always glad to continue seeing the world as a Vet; His most recent journey was in April to escort a fallen comrade to be buried in Korea. Len loved being a representative of Veterans and Aboriginal Veterans across Canada. He grew up in Foxwarren, Manitoba until he moved to the West in 1951. After 1964, Len worked at James Island at an explosive plant, Central Saanich Municipality as part of the Public Works, and as a Commissionaire. In his retirement years, he kept himself busy and continued to work. He enjoyed the trips he took while employed with Sherwood Marine to deliver boats from Oregon and the Interior. Annually, Len took fishing trips with Marvin and friends to Sointula, near the North tip of Vancouver Island. He enjoyed his time out on the water and on the golf course, with his Veterans and friends. In the fall, he loved his hunting trips with Jim, Al and more recently to Vernon with Mary and Von. As an accomplished hunter and fisherman, many pictures and fond memories witness his ability to provide with absolute respect the fish and game he was given. In his spare time he loved to tinker, and make our home lovingly filled with many projects, and fixes around the house; his pen, pocket knife, nails and screws always ready in his pockets. When he needed a break from fixing things, he would reach for his comb, fix his hair and one would find him getting his other "scratch" fixed and having coffee at Spelt's with his friends. Our Len will be fondly remembered by all who have been fortunate enough to have known him. Services will be held Tuesday July 17, 2012 at 10:00 am, Centennial Park Fellowship Church. Thanks to Pastor Mark Cunningham. 7577 Wallace Drive (across from Centennial Park). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
