M. Leonora Britneff

Maria Leonora Britneff (née María Leonor Galindo Ortega) passed away peacefully on Mothers' Day, May 10th, 2015 at the age of 51 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving family: husband, Anthony Alexander Britneff; daughter Beatrice Alexandra Britneff, and son Sebastian Alexander Britneff; sister María Azucena Galindo Ortega, and brothers Julio Aurelio Galindo Ortega and Octavio Augusto Galindo Ortega; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Leonora was predeceased by her mother, Juana Leonor Ortega Martínez, and by her father, Julio Galindo Urquiza.
Leonora was born in 1963 at Mexico City. She joined a culturally rich family active in music, radio, literature and film. Her music instruction started at the Instituto Artene where she qualified as a teacher of the Micro-Pauta Music Method. She studied piano privately with Mexican pianist Silvia Antelma Martínez Ortega, who instilled in her a life-long love of the instrument.
After high school she enrolled with the Conservatorio Nacional de M&uacutesica in Mexico City from which she graduated in 1986 with the Canadian equivalent of grade 12 in piano performance. She won Mexican and Canadian scholarships to study performance piano under renowned Victoria pianist Dr. Robin Wood at the Victoria Conservatory of Music until 1988.
While in Victoria she met her future husband at a reception following a performance she had given at the University of Victoria's Phillip T. Young recital hall. She married Anthony in a Canadian civil ceremony in late 1988 and again in a religious ceremony on February 4th, 1989, in the beautiful Church of Carmen, San éngel, Mexico City. The couple honeymooned in Puerto Escondido and in the city of Oaxaca.
After returning to Canada, Leonora established herself as a well-respected piano teacher in Victoria. In 1991 she renovated her home to include a music studio to house her Steinway and Yamaha pianos. In that studio she passed on her love of music to many children, to a few adults and to her daughter Beatrice and son Sebastian.
Leonora's interest in music was not confined to classical music and included indigenous folk music, sacred music, jazz, ballet and opera.
She was an avid watcher of movies, especially dramas and documentaries. She rarely forgot to pick up the Cinecenta movie schedule and remained a loyal customer at Pic-A-Flic, her go-to for foreign films. The family avoided counting the number of fines she accumulated at the Victoria Public Library for overdue movies and books.
She loved Latin American and English poetry and literature. She became a lay authority on Jane Austen and an active member of the local Jane Austen Society. She never tired of watching or re-reading "Emma" and "Pride and Prejudice". She also devoured biographies, especially those of musicians. She took a keen interest in art with a preference for the impressionist era of painting and for any painting and craft from the art deco and art nouveau periods, especially lamps, ironwork and jewellery. She also loved indigenous and local crafts, and spent many hours perfecting her own knitting and needlework.
Her priority during married life was on the upbringing of her children, and later, on the care of three dogs who brought her so much joy: Lucky, Dancer and Jasper. Leonora was always at music and dance recitals; always willing to volunteer assistance for school activities; and always guiding Beatrice and Sebastian in their transition to adulthood. Her family was paramount.
When family, friends and children remember Leonora the words that unreservedly come to mind are humorous, sometimes hilarious, compassionate, generous, kind, gentle, serene, and humble. She taught all who knew her so much about dignity, beauty and grace.

Deja a su familia, que la quisieron tanto y la recuerdan con amor: su marido, Anthony Alexander Britneff, su hija Beatrice Alexandra Britneff, su hijo Sebastián Alexander Britneff, su hermana María Azucena Galindo, sus hermanos Julio Aurelio Galindo Ortega y Octavio Augusto Galindo Ortega; y muchos tíos, tías, primos, sobrinas y sobrinos. Su madre, Juana Leonor Ortega Martínez y su padre, Julio Galindo Urquiza, fallecieron antes que ella.
Leonora nació en 1963 en Ciudad de Méjico. Creció en un ámbito familiar de gran cultura, en el que se apreciaba la m&uacutesica, la radio, la literatura y el cine. Su educación musical comenzó en el Instituto Artene, donde se calificó de maestra del método de instrucción Musical Micro-Pauta. Estudió piano con la pianista Mejicana Silvia Antelma Martínez Ortega, quien le inspiró con un amor por el instrumento que la acompaño de por vida. Después de cursar sus estudios preparatorios, se matriculó en el Conservatorio Nacional de M&uacutesica en la Ciudad de Méjico. Se graduó en 1986 con el equivalente de Grado 12 en piano. Ganó becas Canadienses y Mejicanas para estudiar piano con el renombrado pianista Dr. Robin Wood en el Conservatorio de M&uacutesica de Victoria. Estudio ahí hasta 1988.

Se volvieron a casar en una ceremonia religiosa el 4 de febrero de 1989, en la bella Iglesia del Carmen en San éngel, Ciudad de Méjico. Después de regresar a Canadá, Leonora se estableció como maestra de piano y llegó a ser muy bien respetada en su profesión.
