Sarah Mae Comstock was born July 14, 1928 in Weyburn Saskatchewan to Herb and Eva Comstock. She was the oldest of three and was predeceased by her sister, Fay and brother Byrant. She is survived by her niece Lorraine Gee (Edward), great nephew, Matthew Gee, great niece Kristen Campbell (Shawn)-great, great grandchildren, Anna and Carter; niece Darlene Thorburn; nephew, Richard Metz (Barb); nephew Garth Metz (Becky).
As a young girl born with clubfeet, she rode her bicycle everywhere delivering telegrams in the later part of World War II. Her last telegraph logbook from 1947 survived the years and it shows the names of neighbors, friends and even her own grandmother to whom she delivered telegrams from soldiers over seas. She never had a driver's license but was still talking about learning to drive at 80.
After the war she worked in Regina for Sears Canada and then for Safeway Canada where she was trained to use a comptometer to calculate inventory until her retirement. In her younger years she enjoyed her social time with friends, and family playing contact rummy for nickels, which was accompanied with a good glass of whiskey and a cigarette!
She had a great love for black and white movies and was a living encyclopedia for movie trivia, historical and world events. She was known to cancel a good steak dinner out if there was a good movie on the tele!
Mae was living in Weyburn with her mother until her mother's death in 1999. She then came to Victoria in 2000 to live with her niece, Lorraine and her family until 2016. After a change in her health she moved to facility care. Mae admired and appreciated the care provided to her by the staff at Beckley Farm Lodge. She recognized their hard work and skill in caring for her as well as other residents and commented to her niece, "At least they know what the heck they are doing!". Her only complaint was the sling used to assist her to the tub. Mae had a kind heart, had great sense of humor, and enjoyed the company of others.
Mae never travelled nor owned a passport. Her wish was that her ashes to be placed in a bunch of small travel size whiskey bottles and tossed into the ocean so she could travel the world! Her ashes will be spread in the ocean with a toast of her favorite whiskey - minus the whiskey bottles to be environmentally friendly!
She brought many laughs and left long standing memories with her friends and family. We are sure she is lobbying for more AMC airtime wherever she is.
