Margaret Bazett

d. November 11, 2014

Margaret Constance Bazett (Farrell) July 26, 1915 Nov. 11, 2014
Margaret was born in Winnipeg, the eldest of three children of Archy and Connie Farrell, but along with her sister Joan and brother Hugh, spent most of her childhood and young adult hood in Vancouver. She enjoyed school, excelling in math and grammar. She also enjoyed music and dance, both ballroom and English country dance which her mother taught. In sports she was an accomplished horse women, badminton player and skied Grouse mountain long before there were any chairlifts. But her chief love was her family and friends. After graduation from Crofton House School she worked in Vancouver but spent some summers working at the Banff Springs Hotel and the Jasper Park Lodge. She went on to become a Legal Secretary at the real estate firm of Turner Meaken. In 1947 She Married Trefor Bazett and moved from Vancouver to Pen Y- Bryn, the Bazetts dairy farm on Bazett Road at Maple Bay, Vancouver Island. Here she ran the house, helped with the farm and had 2 children, Valerie in 1948 and Desmond in 1952. Valerie was born with a heart defect and sadly did not survive emergency open heart surgery when she was 14. Margaret was always very active in her community; some of her volunteer works included the church council at St. Peters Anglican Church, the ACW, hospital auxiliary and president of the Cowichan Valley Symphony Society. Margaret and Trefor allowed the local athletic club to hold a cross country race on their farm, the Bazett farm race is still continuing today and is the oldest continuous cross country race on Vancouver Island. At the death of her husband Trefor at the age of 93, she left the farm and after a short time moved to Rose Bank Gardens, in Victoria, to be nearer her son and his family. She quickly became involved with the community at Rosebank, playing happy birthday on the piano, making up a foursome for bridge, preparing tapioca puddings for those were sick and for 15 years published an informative and well written monthly newsletter, never missing an issue. During her time at Rosebank she had many friends and a few special ones such as Tom Hinton and her very best friend Freda Good. The chief love of her life was always her family and friends, especially her three grandsons, Trefor (Amy), Mark (Joanne) and Kevin, she may have mentioned them a few times to her friends. She will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Lukes Anglican Church, 3821 Cedar Hill Cross Road on Saturday Nov. 29th at 3.30 pm.
