Margaret Syring

May 27, 1929 - October 27, 2022

Margaret was born in Leeds, England, one of five children born to Sarah Ann and Michael Horkan. She began her career as a British Nanny until she was old enough to attend the Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery. Upon graduation as a R.N., she worked as a Midwife before immigrating to Canada along with her life-long friend Margot Buck in 1956.

She worked briefly in Ottawa before accepting a posting providing health care to First Nation’s peoples in remote Manitoba communities. Margaret often talked fondly of her time spent in the North as a great adventure where she had many unique experiences and made good friends. It was in Northern Manitoba where she met her future husband Larry Syring who was an aircraft pilot. They were married in Winnipeg in 1959 and had four children together.

Margaret continued her education in Psychiatric Nursing at Selkirk, Manitoba, while raising four young children. She relocated to British Columbia and continued her career working at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria until her retirement in 1994. She remained in contact with several of her co-workers throughout her life and loved working as a nurse.

Margaret possessed great compassion and empathy, traits that made her an exceptional mother and nurse. With a good sense of humour and many interests, she was an easy person to like and left an impression on those she met. She loved her family and friends, playing games and watching her favourite sports teams.

Margaret passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C., October 27, 2022. She is always with us in our hearts and thoughts and is greatly missed. She is survived by her children John (Rosa Mae), Shawn (Monique), Moira, and Elizabeth. Her ex-husband and friend Larry Syring, grandchildren Christian, Janelle and Patrick (Rowan) and great grandchild Felix.

Arrangements for a Memorial will take place at a later date.
