Mark John Murphy

d. September 20, 2015

Mark was born in Barrie Ontario, one of nine children, and died September 20th in Victoria BC. An artist, Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design 1980 grad, Mark made life-long friendships with many people in Vancouver's arts community beginning in the 1970's. Artists, musicians, actors, journalists, people working in film and electronic media. Much loved for his warmth and wit he'll be missed something awful. Mark got his Irish citizenship some years ago (his grandmother Mary Seadon (nee Collins) was born in Dublin). He never got to Ireland but Ireland got to him pretty good. Mark lived for many years in Vancouver, he and his partner Sandy Knight in their west-end top floor suite with a large patio that was a gathering place for family and friends and Mark and Sandy made many life long friends in Vancouver's gay community. In the early 1990's and for several years they lived on Saturna Island before moving to Victoria, Sandy in the early 2000's and Mark a couple of years later. Many friends from these communities will be missing Mark too. Survived by his former partner and great friend Sandy Knight; Steve and Megan Murphy; JoAnne Stone; Frank Murphy and Myra Thomson; Matt Murphy and Linda Amor; Hugh Murphy and numerous nephews and nieces. He was a devoted grandad figure to his adored 6 year old "Junie," Sandy's granddaughter. He was her "bwana." There will be an informal gathering, a wake, at brother Frank's in Nanaimo on the afternoon and into the evening on Sunday October 11th. If you're able to attend you'd be very welcome.
